My teaching and training philosophy is to know your customers. The learner is at the center of designing. It is critical to know who the learners are and their motivation for engaging in learning, and it is also important to ensure everyone is met where they are at that moment.
Taking a learner-centered atmosphere creates an environment where learners feel more confident in themselves and what they can achieve. Though I may be the expert in front of the class, I always learn just as much from my learners. I reinforce that mistakes are teachable moments where, given some time, the learner discovers how they could alter it next time.
Since 2015, I have focused on TBL design and the learning sciences supporting this approach. I use questions, personal stories, humor, and reflection to help them understand and guide the learning process, which allows the learner to retain and apply what is being taught.
On the personal side, I am the proud mom of furry kids. I love being in nature as often as possible. A surprising fact for those who know me is that I love solitude in travel and on my deck reading!
