I am a Professor of Climate Education at the University of Bath, UK
As my job title suggests, I am passionate about sustainability, including climate action. In terms of teaching, I have always been interested in the transformative power of education. In practice, this means harnessing the temporal and spatial synchronicity of the class (students in the same place at the same time) to get students working together on meaningful problems. Which is of course what TBL is all about.
My teaching is largely in the engineering management space (strategy, innovation, project management) although I sometimes also do a bit of machine learning teaching, in which I once was a specialist (as a research scientist in Hewlett-Packard Labs).
Aside from teaching, I regularly run off road (not very fast nowadays) and when I can go for a quick ‘wild swim’ (any temperature, including New Year) preferably in the sea. I love live music, though don’t go to many gigs nowadays - over the last few years I’ve seen Bruce Springsteen, 3 Daft Monkeys, True Foxes, Ezio, the Zombies, Elbow, Self Esteem, Soft Play, Billy Bragg…
In terms of this community, I love hearing about innovative approaches people have used to rise to various educational challenges and often achieve superior results to the status quo. Perhaps unusually, I love change - it energises me and inspired innovation. For example, I am trying to make TBL and Hyflex play nicely together - I believe a combination of the two can be even better than the sum of the parts (though I haven’t yet achieved that nirvana). I am keen to both share and learn.
