Activity Type and Question Type

When selecting IRAT only and IRAT & TRAT Activity Types the only Question Type available to add is MCQ Single Answer.

Is this correct?

Can we not add a MCQ Multiple Answer for an iRAT?

This is a complex question. My understanding is that the IRAT is meant to cover core concepts from the preparation material. It is to make sure the learners have a good understanding of the key principles needed to address the more complex application questions. Typically single best answer questions are used for IRATs and more complex questions that have multiple correct answers or questions worth debating are typically saved for applications. Pluls, for time management, having single best answer RATs allow you to budget your time more carefully so that the rich debate/discussions are saved for applications. You don’t want to spend all your time in debate on RATs. (And a bit more complex to grade/and allow for the feedback with the TRAT).

Now, I know some people have been working with short answer type questions for RATs - but they still are single best answer.

If you are first starting out, it is best to follow the standard TBL framework before you adjust or modify your approach - so that you are aware of what is working best in your environment. That is not to say that you can’t adapt your active learning environment to what ever you are interested in using - but just remember it may no longer be considered TBL - just a variation of numerous active learning principles. And if it doesn’t work well for you - it is not necessarilly the failure of TBL (if you are not using it as intended).

I totally agree with everything Sandy said. My only question is whether or not Christine is not actually asking about more than one correct answer questions but instead is asking about a “confidence testing” answer format that allows individuals to get partial credit during the iRAT.

This case scenario was that a TBL a question was contested by the class and the faculty agreed that two of the answers could be correct. So the points were corrected after, which is normal. But there were a few students who are scheduled for a make-up iRAT and we wanted to use a copy of the activity but the software does not allow to change the question type to MCQ Multiple Answers or create a new question with that type.
But also, when creating in the question bank the question type is available for MCQ Multiple Answers which gives the faculty the impression they can use those questions in RAT’s but they are not visible when selecting from the question bank for a RAT activity.
I have proposed this to the Product Team so if this is something you would use at your institution I implore you to let InteDashboard know.
Thank you both for your insight and input.

Hi Christine!
As @SandyCook and @lmichaelsen pointed out that RATs usually have a single best answer, we follow the same principle on InteDashboard. You can try implementing iRAT with confidence-based testing. You can find the guide here and you can learn more about CBT technique here.

A workaround could be: you can create Application activity with multi-correct answers as an individual activity on InteDashboard and use it for the iRAT activity.
