The Use of AI in Team-Based Learning

:rocket: In our latest session, @BrianODwyer presented the findings from a comprehensive survey on the integration of AI in Team-Based Learning. Educators shared their experiences, and we explored how AI is currently being used in TBL classrooms, along with the challenges and opportunities it presents. Here’s a recap of the key takeaways from the session.

:bulb: SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Varied AI Adoption: The survey revealed diverse rates of AI adoption among TBL educators. While a substantial number of educators believe AI has a positive impact on TBL, others remain neutral about its role.

  • Real-World Applications: AI is being integrated into TBL for tasks like generating multiple-choice questions (MCQs), enhancing application exercises, summarizing course materials, and improving clarity in assessments. However, many educators noted that AI-generated content still requires refinement.

  • Challenges in AI Integration: Despite AI’s growing presence in education, challenges persist, including unclear integration strategies, ethical dilemmas, and data security concerns, which hinder the full implementation of AI.

  • Future Potential: Many educators are still in the exploratory phase, experimenting with AI’s applications in TBL. There is a call for clearer guidelines and more reliable AI solutions to ensure effective integration into educational practices.

:thought_balloon: INSIGHTS AND TIPS FROM PARTICIPANTS

  • Trusting AI Outputs: Participants emphasized the importance of validating AI-generated content. The challenge of distinguishing reliable outputs from AI-created ones, especially as AI-generated articles and papers become more common, was a recurring concern.

  • Encouraging Critical Thinking: Several educators suggested using AI as a tool to foster critical thinking, not just for answers. Designing prompts that encourage students to explain their reasoning behind AI-generated responses can transform AI into a deeper learning tool.

  • Dynamic Application Exercises: Some educators are experimenting with dynamic, student-led application exercises. One approach mentioned was using more gallery walks, where students review and discuss each other’s work, which allows for deeper engagement compared to traditional multiple-choice formats.

  • Developing Policies for AI : A few educators have developed policies for student use of AI, ensuring that AI is used appropriately for tasks like summarizing and structuring materials. Such policies aim to balance the benefits of AI with academic integrity
