Welcome, please introduce yourself!

Hi BeeEn,

I agree education can make the world better & TBL is a great part of making education better. Have you started using it yet?

Hi Woon,

There are many online resources about TBL and many of the uses of TBL are in adult learning settings. In the health field (I’m counting medical, dental, nursing students as adults) there are many cases that you can find in the Team-based Learning Collaborative (if a member), or MedEdPortal (search TBL). I’ve used it mostly in professional development activities, and Brian O’Dwyer has used it in aeronautic and many unique organizations. What is the topic area you are seeking?

Hi Sandy, thanks for the welcome. What learning resources would you recommend for a newbie to TBL?

There are quite a lot of resources for a newbie.
First, I would recommend you become a member of the Team-based Learning Collaborative (TBLC) (https://www.teambasedlearning.org/) and check out their website. They have a lot of resources there. More is available once you become a member.

Second, check out Intedashboard’s website blog (Blogs - InteDashboard). They have lots of articles and videos. Plus, they run a series of workshops, in collaboration with TBLC - called Fundamentals. This gives you the basics of all the elements of TBL. Their next series is being run in January.

Once you have the fundamentals, we urge you to consider signing up for the practitioner certificate with TBLC (TBLC Certifications - Team-Based Learning Collaborative), where you will be asigned a mentor to help you both through the development of your TBL module(s) as well as give you a certification.

Lastly, there are many books on TBL you can read - Larry Michaelsen’s books are always a good start. Just google Team-based Learning and you can find many resources.

I hope this helps to get started. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask the community!

Hello! My name is Joanne, I’m based in Malaysia.

I am not currently in a teaching position, but I’m interested to explore how TBL can be introduced to educational institutions and groups here, and learn about effective methods of easing the transition from traditional lecture-based teaching to a more interactive and engaging approach with TBL.

Fun fact - I enjoy handmade arts & crafts, and have a thing for paper flowers.

 Hi!

I’m Arminé and I’m based in the beautiful city of Lisbon, Portugal🌊

While I’m not in a teaching role, I want to enhance my understanding of Team-Based Learning and innovative approaches to it, connect with passionate TBL educators, and use the knowledge to plan better faculty development TBL workshops that empower educators globally!:rocket:

Fun fact about me: I absolutely LOVE animals and since childhood I’ve dreamed of creating a shelter for all stray animals worldwide to provide them the care they need🐾

I’m Tom Jansen–living in Herndon, Virginia in the United States. I recently retired from Boy Scouts of America–with my last role being Scout executive for Transatlantic Council out of Brussels, Belgium.

I currently volunteer on the membership, finance, and marketing committees of the Team-Based Learning Collaborative https://www.teambasedlearning.org

I would be delighted to learn more about sharing team-based learning with educators, universities, and organizations throughout the world.

Welcome to the community, Tom! Great to have you here

Hi Sandy!

I find handling group dynamics to be particularly demanding. Balancing various personalities and preferences is among the most challenging aspects for me.

Alsoi, as a non-native English speaker, I’m still working on building the confidence to effectively facilitate training sessions.

Hey there, I’m Alex Santiago! Formerly an educator at Our Lady of Fatima University in Metro Manila, Philippines. While Team-Based Learning (TBL) hasn’t taken the teaching scene by storm in my country, I’m convinced it’s a game-changer worth exploring.

I’m all about fostering a community where we can swap ideas and dive into different viewpoints on education, technology, (AI), and teaching. Let’s collaborate and make learning a blast!

On a personal note, I’ve got my sights set on Peru. Yep, I’m currently tackling Spanish courses because hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is on my bucket list. ¡Vamos! #bucketlistcheck

Hello Everyone,

I am Steve Schneid from UC San Diego. I am the Director of Educational Development & Scholarship for School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy. I direct our summer prematriculation course and also teach a significant portion of our Postbacc Premedical Program. I started using TBL and InteDashboard in 2020 for Postbacc Program courses and then the last two years in the summer prematriculation course. This past fall, we started using InteDashboard at the School of Medicine in different ways. Overall it has gone quite well in all settings. Thrilled to join this community

Hi Steve! Welcome to the community. We are so excited to have you join us! It would be interesting to learn how you are using InteDashboard in different ways. :star_struck:

Welcome to the community, Alex!

While TBL might not be the local rockstar, let’s continue turning the education scene into a stage for innovation. Let’s be the trailblazers, shall we? :mortar_board::bulb:

And Peru? ¡Fantástico! :national_park: Count me in for swapping ideas and plotting our way to Machu Picchu—¡Vamos indeed! :world_map::speech_balloon: #EduExplorers #BucketListCrew

Welcome - great to have you with us!

Hey everyone! I’m Vanesse and I’m based in Singapore. :singapore: I’m not an educator but I’ve experienced Project-Based Learning before, which I find has a few similar aspects to TBL.

It was a fulfilling experience for me as a student so I’d like to know how TBL is unique from PjBL and other learning methods. I’m also keen to witness the impact of TBL on classrooms from all over the world!

And a fun fact about me: Like most Asian kids, my mum made me learn the piano but I gave up at Grade 6

see my response to Cynthia - especially the annual conference will be a great place to discuss with people how they have transitioned. (TBLC 2024 Annual Conference)

Vanesse - nice to meet you this past week. Keep engaging with TBLC check out how Duke-NUS and LKC schools of medicine use TBL. Also take the Intro to TBL workshop &/or fundamentals series and you will get a better idea of the differences. My interpretation of the difference between project based and team based is in the names. I feel that team based focuses on team development and actually scaffolds the teams with the requisite skills to be able to do the project (either individually or as a team). Projects tend to lead to what people seem to “hate” about group work - where one or two do all the work and others get credit - but TBL is (supposed to be) designed to be activities that enable for everyone to contribute.

Open to other’s thoughts on this.

Welcome WenJun. I used to be in Singapore - where are you using TBL? any specific challenges you face?

Hi Steve - great to have you a part of this community. I’m sure you can share with the others so they can learn from your experience.
