Hi Community!
I wanted to kick off a discussion about Accessibility in Team-Based Learning, drawing from insights gathered during a recent workshop. Three common elements include: screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, and accommodation timing.
Screen Readers and Keyboard Navigation: Software compatibility with screen readers is critical for individuals with visual impairments, enabling them to audibly interpret on-screen content. Additionally, software supporting keyboard-only navigation aids those who struggle with mouse use, facilitating navigation through screen elements solely via a keyboard.
Individual Timing Accommodations: Some students require extra time for specific learning activities, necessitating nuanced process changes. Unlike software adjustments, this aspect can take effort from educators for effective implementation. Some strategies used include conducting assessments in a secure campus testing center the night before the TBL session for students with accomodations or allowing asynchronous completion before class.
Accommodations During Team Activities: Exploring accommodations for individuals uncomfortable in large group settings raised intriguing discussions. This includes those overwhelmed with the larger number of people or noisy environments, quarantine situations or personal preferences. Some strategies include having teams with some members physically present and some remote. Others include a remote only team for that particular TBL session.
Steve Cayzer at the University of Bath gave a preview of how techniques for using TBL in hybrid formats can be used in this situation. He will dive deeper into using TBL in hybrid formats at an event in late January. Details are here.
For those interested, we will post details, slides, and recordings of our TBL events in the forum’s event section.
Let’s continue the conversation!
Kind regards,
Brian
