Integrating AI into Team-Based Learning: What’s Working, What to Avoid - Panel Discussion

Dear colleagues,
I’m excited to invite you to my upcoming session with @Richard.Plunkett, Integrating AI into TBL: What’s Working, What to Avoid, happening on June 11 at 10 am
EDT/3 pm BST.

In this interactive session, we will share how we’re using AI in our courses—what’s working,
what we’ve adjusted, and lessons learned along the way.
Learning objectives:

  • Explore practical ways educators are using AI to support key aspects of TBL.
  • Identify common pitfalls and challenges when integrating AI into TBL teaching.
  • Learn best practices for using AI tools ethically and effectively in a collaborative
  • learning environment.

You can register here.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Cheers,
Dr. Amy Stone

Thanks to everyone who joined our recent panel on Integrating AI into Team-Based Learning! It
was great to hear such a range of perspectives, and I wanted to share a few reflections from the discussion—especially for those who couldn’t make it.

  • One big topic that came up was how we’re using AI to support course design—things like drafting exam questions or organizing content. Some of us are already testing out custom LLMs to create targeted teaching materials. These tools show promise when used thoughtfully and aligned with course goals.
  • We also spent time talking about how to build a classroom culture where students (and instructors) are open about their use of AI. Instead of focusing on strict rules, we found it more productive to encourage conversations about when and how AI is being used. That kind of transparency tends to go further in creating accountability.
  • Ethical use came up a lot too—especially around making sure students aren’t just using AI as a shortcut, but actually engaging with the material and with each other. It’s a balance we’re all still figuring out.
  • And finally, there’s the policy side. Most of us agreed that policies around AI use are still evolving, so we’re often left to navigate these decisions on our own. Sharing experiences on what’s working (and what’s not) becomes especially helpful.

If you’ve been exploring ways to integrate AI into your TBL classes, I’d love to hear what’s been
working for you—or what challenges you’re still trying to figure out. What’s one approach or idea
you’ve tried that others here might learn from?
