Hi everyone,
For those running Team-Based Learning in hybrid classrooms, we’re curious how you handle team composition.
Do you typically create teams so that they are:
- Mixed-mode teams (each team includes both in-person and remote learners), or
- Mode-based teams (teams are either all in-person or all online)?
If you’ve tried both, what helped you decide and what did you notice in terms of engagement, equity, and team dynamics?
Excited to hear how different TBLers approach this!
I have tried hybrid teams. It doesn’t work well and I wouldn’t recommend it. Sometimes you need to due to eg illness etc - and better to have a hybrid team than to reconfigure the teams (which is even worse). Having a pure online team does work well, though you do have to figure out how to include them properly in the debrief

Thanks for sharing this, Steve. Appreciate your perspective as always.
Great point about hybrid teams being a short-term workaround when needed. If you have any other insights from your hybrid TBL experience, feel free to share in this thread!
