Training Students for Peer Evaluation in TBL – Open Discussion

How do you train your students for peer evaluation in TBL?

As someone who regularly uses peer evaluation in my TBL courses, I’ve learned that how we prepare students for the process makes a key difference. I’m curious to learn what others are doing—what’s working, what’s still challenging, and what creative strategies you’ve tried.

I’ve listed some common approaches in the poll below—please take a moment to vote and feel free to share more about your approach (or challenges) in the comments!

  • I provide sample comments and examples of constructive feedback
  • I discuss evaluation criteria and expectations in class
  • I use rubrics or structured forms to guide their input
  • I don’t offer specific training — students complete the form
  • I ask students to use AI to assist them in providing qualitative feedback
  • I’m still figuring out the best approach

I’ll be leading a live open discussion on October 22 at 12 pm EDT / 5 pm BST where we’ll unpack the results of this poll, explore the most-used strategies, and discuss tips, tools, and training techniques that can help students give meaningful feedback in a TBL setting. You can find all the details and register here. I’d love to see you there!

Great question. In my project management unit, I include formal training on feedback including the ‘SBI’ framework (situation, behaviour, impact). I also get teams to create a team contract at the start of semester with expectations - there is then something to refer to when giving feedback. I hadn’t thought of using AI but I would think it migh tbe useful for ‘softening’ criticism or making feedback more specific and actionable.

I like the idea of the SBI framework for peer evaluation. It would be interesting to know if it can be adapted to other disciplines.

Only 2 days left until our open discussion on training students for peer evaluation in TBL!
If you haven’t had a chance to vote yet, there’s still time — your input helps shape what we’ll explore together during the session.

You can register for the discussion here, if you haven’t done so yet.

Hope to see you there! :waving_hand:

I use a combination of several of the above. I am very interested in using AI to assist in peer evaluation!
